Reseller hosting is a special form of hosting, where you buy hosting space to be sold to others. Usually, you get a certain amount of storage space and bandwidth, and you can resell (hence the name) it to your customers. Often your space is divided into fixed portions and you can sell only these portions (for example, 10 portions of 25MB hosting space), but sometimes you can divide it flexibly as per your customers’ needs.

When you sign up for reseller hosting, you can offer your users much more options that if you sold space from your normal hosting account. Several benefits include:

Your customers will get access to a control panel to easily manage their hosting space. This is not possible when you sell space from normal hosting account, since the only admin panel you get is the one for yourself.

Your customers will get technical support from your hosting company. You will not have to provide technical support to your users.

If you plan to start your web hosting business, reseller hosting is a good choice for you.

Affiliate programs are means of hosting companies to increase sales. Simply put, when you sign up for affiliate program, you can sell hosting services of the company, and earn a certain percentage of your sales. Participating in affiliate program has many benefits, which include:

No up-front investments. Affiliate programs are nearly always free.

No need to create your own hosting offer or website. You can simply direct your users to the hosting company’s website, and they will learn everything there.

No worry about technical support, sales processing or other business tasks. Everything is handled by the hosting company.

When choosing an affiliate program, you have to pay attention at what percentage of sales you will get from the hosting company. Some companies offer as many as 50% or higher commission, and some only 10% or lower. You should also check if the hosting offer you are about to promote is really something that your customers would buy. Check the prices and parameters, ask yourself a question “Would I buy hosting at this company?”. Sometimes it turns out that even if your commission is lower, but the offer is more competitive, you will earn more money.

When you want to have your own hosting company, you have several options. Each of them has advantages and disadvantages. You should evaluate each of them and decide which is best for you.

Buying a dedicated server, and selling hosting accounts on this server. This may be the most flexible option, but is also most troublesome. You have to create your company’s website, set up order processing, and create a shopping cart for your customers, and so on. You will also have to provide technical support for your users, and you might have to hire some technical staff to help you.

Signing up for an affiliate program with one or more hosting company. This will allow you to sell their hosting services for a certain percentage of total sales. All you need to do is to direct people to hosting provider’s website to let them learn about the offer. It’s an easy option, but you may not earn as much as with other options.

Buying a reseller hosting account. This is a mix of the above two options. You still need to do some business and technical jobs (such as sales processing) but not as much as if you were hosting everything on your own server. Up-front investments can also be much smaller with this option.

Today, Internet is not a very safe place. Information which is transmitted through it can be sometimes read by other people. There are many ways that malicious people (known as crackers) can learn the information visitors are exchanging with your website, and obtain sensitive information (for example, passwords or credit card numbers). It could also be possible that they presented to unaware customers a modified version of your website hosted on their server, in order to collect some important information from them.

In order to fight this, a special Internet protocol called SSL was created (when speaking of viewing Web pages over SSL, often the term HTTPS is used). It uses cryptographic encryption of the data sent to and from your website, so that no-one can decrypt and understand it except your server software. This way your customers’ data can be safe, and the visitors themselves can feel secure because they know that their information is transmitted over the Internet securely.

In order to use HTTPS, you need to have a SSL certificate. It’s a special data which identifies your server, and tells Internet browsers how to encrypt the data sent to it. By using a SSL certificate, you ensure your customers that:

They are downloading data from your site and not any other site, because an SSL certificate is only valid with your site’s domain.

Information that they send overt the Internet is secure, because only your server knows how to decode it.

You should use HTTPS if you want to collect sensitive data on your website, such as credit card data or social security numbers. Then you need to obtain a SSL certificate, because it is required to use the encryption. Some hosting providers give SSL certificates with their hosting plans, and others require you to buy it separately. SSL certificate costs usually $100-$200 per year when bought separately.

A shopping cart is special software that allows your site’s visitors to buy some goods and pay for them. This is a similar functionality to a real shopping cart in your mall, where you can put various goods you want to buy, and then go to the counter and pay for them It is a great feature when you want to have an online shop or other commercial website.

Many hosting companies offer shopping cart scripts with their hosting services. You can put these scripts for free on your website, and use them to collect information about visitor’s orders. They will help you with the automation of your selling process, by tracking who bought what, when and how much, sending you customized emails with order contents, etc.

However, in many cases you will need to sign up with another provider to process credit card payments, in order to obtain the so-called merchant account. It is a special account for processing online credit card payments. You will have to supply your merchant account information to your shopping cart software in order to process these payments.

Among many parameters your hosting service can have, one of the most important is the operating system the server is running. The operating system determines what kind of scripts can be run on the server, what databases are supported and so on. There are three major operating system types used on servers:

Linux. Allows for running scripts written in PHP, Perl, Python and other Unix-originated languages. Usually supports MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.

Windows. Allows for running ASP scripts and utilizing .NET and other Microsoft technologies. Supports Microsoft SQL Server database.

Unix, such as Solaris or FreeBSD. Usually have similar capabilities to Linux.

If your website has only static pages (i.e. no scripts), it shouldn’t matter what operating system your server has. You should probably choose Linux or Unix hosting because they are cheaper. On the other hand, if you want to use scripts or database, you should choose the operating system which supports the technologies you use.

When you order a dedicated server, you can choose between managed and unmanaged servers. There are big differences between them, so you should consider them when choosing a hosting service.

Managed servers are managed (hence the name) by the hosting company. You will have access to a nice admin panel, where you can set up most basic server configurations (like domains, mailboxes, etc). You don’t need to worry about configuring and maintaining your server, because this will be handled by the hosting provider. However, this option is usually more expensive.

Unmanaged (often called self-managed) servers are managed by you. You are responsible for configuring the server, and maintaining it. You may need to install some software on it, and you will have to configure domains, mailboxes etc on your own. You will also need to keep the system software up-to-date so it is not prone to hacker attacks. This option is only for people who have basic knowledge of Unix administration and are willing to spend some time configuring the server. It is however much less expensive.

There are basically two types of hosting service: shared and dedicated. They differ in terms of performance and price. Their characteristics are as follows:

Shared hosting. It’s a configuration where several websites are put on on single server. This way the hosting company can reduce its cost, and their services can be much cheaper. However, there are usually much more limits on the storage and bandwidth, because one server must handle several websites at once. You should choose this kind of hosting if your website will not get really many visitors (less than few thousands a day).

Dedicated hosting. Your website is the only one hosted on the server. You can utilize full hard disk size for your website, you can run scripts which consume lots of CPU power, and you can have many more visitors on your website. You should choose this type of hosting if you plan to run a very popular website, or you have high storage or bandwidth requirements (for example, site with free downloads).

When you cannot find any information whether the offered hosting services are shared or dedicated, they are most likely shared ones. Dedicated hosting very rarely costs less than $80 a month, so if hosting plans you are interested in are significantly cheaper, they are most definitely shared ones.
